The appointment of so-called experts to resolve eThekwini’s water supply deficiency is simply another shabby pretence by the ANC-administered municipality to address the debacle they created (The Mercury, December 18).
If the water department had been doing its job and systematically replacing ageing infrastructure, as was the policy of the former Durban City Council, the crisis that has arisen would not have occurred.
That is the crux of the water supply issue. It does not require a task team to figure that out. Instead of hiring three so-called experts whose personal track records are no recommendation and costing the municipality hefty consultant fees, one man’s input is all that is required: Neil Macleod, the last competent municipal water engineer Durban had.
