One of the conspicuous aspects of society is how colour-blind some of us have become.
This is widely evident wherever traffic lights are working. Opticians and ophthalmic surgeons should be doing brisk business rectifying the disability of many motorists whose eyesight, sadly, is unable to distinguish between the colours red and green.
Of course, if we had a proactive City Police unit they would be able to finance their budget easily based on the number of fines issued to motorists who brazenly ignore red traffic lights.
It also begs the question of how these traffic light defaulters were able to satisfy the requirements for their drivers’ licences. Clearly, the optical part of the licence test needs drastic revision.
The selfish disregard and indifference of motorists who routinely run red lights actually reflects a greater menace afflicting society: lawlessness. Brazen flouting of road safety is the result of the extent to which those responsible for enforcing the law are guilty of dereliction of duty.
