If Blessing Manale of the Presidential Climate Commission had made the effort to analyse the UN Secretary-General’s message on World Tourism Day concerning “the climate emergency,” he would have noted its fundamental contradiction concerning travel and transport (Business Report, September 27).

Besides regurgitating the absolute falsehood that carbon emissions are causing climate change and global warming, exhorting the tourism industry to involve itself in climate issues without addressing the issue of travel and transport is a bit like trying to bake a cake without heat.

Given the mania to decarbonise the planet, how does Blessing Manale expect tourists to reach distant continents when air travel requires fossil fuel? Given their grand plan to decarbonise the planet, what provision have they made to substitute all the carbon-based machinery, appliances and accoutrements the tourism industry requires to function?

How do they intend to mine the various elements needed to manufacture the “renewables” upon which they base future energy supplies? Without powerful fossil fuel-driven engines none of that is possible.

The sheer fiction of the narrative that human beings cause climate change deserves as much contempt as the fiction purveyed by the Flat Earth Society. Compounding that is the sheer waste of money and resources on a presidential commission.

It’s time the news media distinguished between fact and fiction and dispensed with publishing pages of newsprint on a narrative that is devoid of scientific and historical truth.

Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda claims that since the Queen Mary 2 paid a very brief visit to Durban harbour, one swallow makes a summer and, therefore, eThekwini’s tourism is now revived. But the front page report in The Mercury of April 6 of the demise of the beachfront tells a different story.

The closure of the iconic beachfront Funworld after more than 60 years because of the degradation of the area does not square with Kaunda’s spin. The indifference of the municipality in failing to respond to Nic Steyn’s letter of Notice reflects the arrogance of these ANC mandarins whose “governance” is funded by ratepayers.

Filling his bloated report with details about tourism indabas and projections does nothing to disguise the fact that Umhlanga is the tourist node of preference because of the crime and grime in Durban. If it was not for the ICC hosting events, most tourists would avoid Durban which the ANC claims will be Africa’s “most caring and liveable city by 2030.”

Dream on, Kaunda. The only thing that might make 2030 worth anticipating will be if the ANC is out of power.

Worldwide the promotion of tourism requires conditions that are respectful of law and order and that promise safety and security when accessing sites and attractions. Yet the commissar for Tourism, Sihle Zikalala, prioritises racial and gender representativity ahead of such considerations (Mercury, May 8).

Thanks to the ANC’s inability to curb and prosecute crime, KZN is under siege: Land grabs, rock-throwing from bridges, sabotage and looting at the Mooi River toll, mobs that arbitrarily shut down construction sites, a stadium that is trashed, violent murders that occur daily, the most dangerous roads in the country with 111 people killed during the Easter recess. Such circumstances do not promote tourism.

On top of that, the majority of municipalities, on which tourism depends for basic services, are bankrupt, corrupt and embroiled in looting exchanges between different factions of the ANC, some of which we now know are even uneducated.

Tourism can thrive only in an environment that is secure and stable. The fact that Zikalala ignores those issues and instead obsesses about racial and gender quotas shows how out of touch he is with the realities of the tourist and hospitality industry. But then that is hardly surprising given the shambles that prevails in every aspect of governance under the ANC.
