The Mercury’s March 26 editorial on discussion in Parliament concerning media communications, podcasting and media platforms, rightly warned against attempts to police media freedom. However, the experience of media control in America shows that there are forces beyond the boundaries which legislation may seek to manage.
The key term missing from the editorial was a reference to ‘narrative.’ That term determines what is ‘misinformation’ and ‘disinformation.’ Who decides what the narrative is on an issue are the owners of the antenna and the algorithms and their financial allies. Never was that more apparent than during the so-called COVID pandemic.
By harnessing the mass media, Big Pharma imposed the narrative that unless one was vaccinated, society was in grave risk of mass deaths. Although brave scientific voices strongly disputed that narrative, they were dismissed as purveyors of misinformation. As a result, Big Pharma posted hundreds of billions in profits.
The mass media wittingly, and in a few cases, unwittingly served as the messengers of Big Pharma. The money involved was too great to allow the narrative to be questioned. Worse still, the Biden regime colluded with Big Pharma in having the jab mandatory despite the rights of the people given in Article One of the Constitution.
Across America, lawsuits have been and are being mounted against companies and Big Pharma not only for violating the Constitution but for the falsehoods proclaimed regarding the safety and efficacy of the mRNA jab.
An even more frightening development is the absolute control over media platforms now being imposed by the EU in Europe. Led by its president, Ursula von der Leyen, the EU has arrogated to itself the role of determining what constitutes dissent from its narratives and what constitutes misinformation.
In other words, free speech is dead in the EU. Huge fines and imprisonment face dissenters. As the Gatestone Institute of February 11 remarked, the EU should be called the EUSSR – a reference to how communication was controlled in communist Russia.
Hope for sensible control of media platforms lies in responsible owners like Elon Musk of X, Pavel Durov of Telegram, Trump’s Truth Social and Chris Pavlovski of Rumble. Wherever the globalists prevail, trusting politicians to prove a firewall in defence of free speech is a pipedream.
