Denis Pather’s columns invariably provide entertaining reading. However, his attempt to link the Trump Administration’s policy towards Harvard University with apartheid’s “bush colleges” is out of line (POST, June 4-9).
In his election campaign, Trump promised to root out the anti-American, globalist Marxism that has infested tertiary institutions. He wants scrutiny of hiring practices and an end to race exclusionary measures in graduate programs, particularly regarding anti-semitism. Punitive action was promised if Harvard failed to remedy those practices.
Although $7 billion in debt, Harvard failed to respond, and so $8.7 billion of Federal funding due to it is under review.
In cracking down on violence and the disruption of academic life caused by foreign so-called students at Harvard, Columbia, Cornell and other universities, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has spelt out US policy. A visa is a privilege to be in the US and an obligation to abide by its laws. It is not a license to incite and propagate the destruction of the US, vandalise and torch facilities on campuses, and subject those who differ to intimidation and violence.
There is a fine line between excessive tolerance and anarchy. Unfortunately, that line has been violated to the extent that intolerance now prevails on certain campuses towards those who do not abide by the narrative decreed by the anarchists and their ilk.
Intolerance of visa violations and subjecting defaulters to deportation is necessary to restore order so that differences can coexist without being coerced and vilified. Trump and Rubio’s efforts in that regard should be applauded.
